Description

Camp Colton is an eighty-acre event facility of incomparable beauty. A mere 45 minutes drive from most any address in Portland, our camp is nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, between Molalla and Estacada, Oregon. The woods and creeks create an ambiance of stimulating serenity. Its forest has ripened and deepened since its beginnings as a children's camp in the 1920's. Camp Colton is heavily timbered and the topography is varied. The grounds include two creeks, a pond, a lodge, six retreat cottages, bridal dressing quarters and an historic chapel. There are several miles of hiking trails which cover interesting and beautiful terrain. At an elevation of 850 feet, our climate is moderate year round. Visitors enjoy hiking and exploring, fishing in the creeks or in our trout ponds, bird watching, photography, playing horseshoes, and evening campfires. Access to Camp Colton is easy and convenient, entering directly off of state highway 211, yet from the moment you pass through our stone-pillar gate, the outside world will be forgotten. Whether for a country wedding or a week-long retreat, no matter what the occasion, you will find the setting in our forest enchanting. And if there is a wedding in your future, plan to make it part of a return to your days at summer camp. A camp wedding suits the times; you will have the elegance you desire for your wedding, with the informality of camp.

This is a classic DIY affair, and especially suits the couple who loves the idea of keeping their wedding size small, and having all guests camping with them. A sleepy wedding morning spent outdoors breakfasting with all those who will bear witness to your union....and all in their jammies!...can be a great way to banish wedding jitters. The cottages provide for forty, and the entire group can be expanded to as many as sixty-five (with camping and RV's). The accommodations are provided for two nights (more can be added). The format of this style of gathering is NOT one that provides an exclusive use of our entire property (that would be a "wedding weekend retreat"), excluding any other uses, but it does provide all of the camp east of Canyon Creek (see map of camp) as the exclusive domain of your group. The price is quite simply the cost of a two-night stay in the cottages, but you are getting, in addition, privacy for your group in the 60 or so acres east of Canyon Creek during your reserved hours. It does not include use of the lodge for your reception, but it an be added on.

"Beautiful, Relaxed Wedding Retreat"

Posted on 9/27/2011 by An Eventective User from Portland, Oregon
My husband's (then fiance) family was coming from across the country for our wedding and we wanted something special that would allow us to have as much time to spend together as possible and give them a real Oregon experience. Camp Colton was perfect and they are still talking about it. Actually both our families are quite large and at Camp Colton we were able to provide overnight accommodations for all of his 6 and my 3 brothers and sisters, parents, spouses, children and the wedding party for a very reasonable price. The cabins were fixed up and modernized nicely and very cozy and cute. A few people chose to camp that night, and there was room for many more.

The weekend started with a rehearsal dinner that went well into the wee hours around a crackling campfire big enough for all of us on Friday. Saturday, everyone had all day to hand around, hike, play horseshoes and enjoy the camp while the bride and groom rushed around getting ready. Well, the bride did. The groom enjoyed the camp with everyone else. Saturday evening was the ceremony in the chapel. It was so simple and beautiful. I can still remember the amazing smell of pine or fir. It was perfect and needed very little decoration because of the elegant simplicity of it. Our reception on a hot hot July day was the perfect temperature under the trees in the evening. The next day we were able to have a brunch for the wedding party and family.

The staff at Camp Colton were relaxed and helpful but not intrusive. They quietly hid in the sidelines making sure everything went smoothly and I hardly noticed they were there.

The one downside I can see is that they did not provide any catering, music, flowers, etc. I had to find that myself and it does add up when you start including it all. I wanted to find it myself mainly because I had very specific things I wanted and was able to get help from friends to save money, but if you are looking for a very easy all in one kind of wedding this might not be it.
